Editors

Meet the editors

Dr. Dinesh Nagegowda, a plant molecular biologist, writes and reviews the lab, genetics, gardening, forestry, ecology and human-cell biology pages. Dr. Chyrle Bonk, a mixed-animal veterinarian, covers the animal pregnancy, dog, cat, livestock and other-animal pages.

Our editorial standards and peer-review process

Every single calculator, model, and guide published on Biology Calculator carries a named byline from one of our two primary editors. We do not publish anonymous articles, unverified algorithmic summaries, or uncredited third-party scripts. Every tool represents an active collaboration between computational modeling and real-world biological domain expertise.

1. Four-stage verification pipeline

Before any calculator or guide is accepted into our live repository, it passes through four rigorous editorial gates:

  • Mathematical modeling: The underlying biological formula is converted into client-side JavaScript. Edge cases, division-by-zero scenarios, and extreme biological inputs (e.g., micro-dose thresholds, neonate weights, saturation plateaus) are stress-tested against published benchmarks.
  • Primary literature corroboration: Equations are cross-referenced directly against peer-reviewed journals, national laboratory standards, university agricultural extension bulletins (e.g., WSU, Clemson, Cornell, Oklahoma State), and authoritative veterinary manuals (Merck Veterinary Manual, DEFRA VMD).
  • Expert editorial review: The designated specialist editor (Dr. Dinesh A. Nagegowda, PhD, for molecular biology and plant science; Dr. Chyrle Bonk, DVM, for companion animals and livestock) conducts a line-by-line review of the clinical or laboratory caveats, worked examples, and safety guardrails.
  • Worked example validation: Each tool includes at least two real-world worked examples calculated manually on paper to ensure that the user interface returns exact, reproducible figures matching published scientific consensus.

2. Veterinary & clinical review methodology

Our veterinary calculators—spanning animal gestation milestones, canine and feline nutrition, chocolate toxicity thresholds, and prescribed medication ranges—are reviewed by Dr. Chyrle Bonk, DVM. In veterinary medicine, mathematical formulas are diagnostic aids rather than clinical prescriptions. Our editorial policy strictly requires:

  • Explicit licensed dosage ceilings (e.g. the 16 mg/kg/day canine tramadol limit) printed clearly alongside every calculation result.
  • Active real-time warnings whenever user inputs approach or exceed safe physiological parameters.
  • Unambiguous disclaimers emphasizing that educational calculations must never supersede an in-person physical examination or valid prescription by a licensed practitioner.
  • Comprehensive contraindication lists (e.g., feline meloxicam black-box warnings, drug-drug interaction cautions with SSRIs/MAOIs).

3. Laboratory, genomic & agronomic review methodology

Tools in molecular biology, genetics, tree forestry, and plant physiology are curated by Dr. Dinesh A. Nagegowda, PhD, Chief Scientist at CSIR-CIMAP. In experimental bench science and fieldwork, theoretical equations frequently encounter real-world instrumentation limits. Our molecular biology guides mandate:

  • Linearity thresholds: Noting where spectrophotometer absorbance deviates from the Beer-Lambert law (e.g. above 1.5 A260) and recommending fluorometric validation where appropriate.
  • Reagent and enzyme caveats: Distinguishing theoretical molecular weights from post-translational modifications, and vector-to-insert molar ratios from simple mass ratios.
  • Agronomic soil testing: Translating laboratory reports (buffer pH vs. water pH, cation exchange capacity) into practical garden and field recommendations backed by state university extension data.

4. Editorial independence & commercial neutrality

Biology Calculator operates with strict commercial independence. Our editors receive no compensation from pharmaceutical manufacturers, veterinary clinic chains, feed suppliers, or chemical brands. We do not participate in paid product placement, affiliate link stuffing, or sponsored reviews. All citations are selected solely for their academic authority, reproducibility, and educational clarity.

5. Continuous maintenance & corrections

Biological standards, taxonomic classifications, and clinical guidelines evolve. When an academic source updates its guidance or when an observant user spots a discrepancy, we investigate immediately. Corrections are documented publicly on our dedicated Corrections log, and the modified date is updated in the page schema. To report an error or suggest an equation refinement, contact our editorial desk directly at contact@biologycalculator.org.
